How STCI builds local development on Semirara Island

On Semirara Island, students seeking to learn vocational trades don’t have to venture far from home. Semirara Training Center, Inc. (STCI) offers its students opportunities to learn practical skills through hands-on training, helping develop a skilled workforce capable of meeting industry and community needs.

Established by SMPC in 2006, STCI is a TESDA-accredited Training and Assessment Center that provides free technical-vocational education to residents of Semirara Island and neighboring communities. The training center's programs equip students with practical skills that are relevant to many sectors such as automotive and land transportation, metals and engineering, and electrical work. 

As of July 2026, STCI offers the following programs: 

• Automotive Servicing NC I 

• Computer System Servicing NC II 

• Driving NC II 

• Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II 

• Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC I 

• Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC II 

In 2025, STCI produced 153 graduates, bringing its total number of graduates since 2006 to 1,967. As the number of STCI’s graduates increased in recent years, the training center is exploring expansion plans to accommodate more students. With the island’s increasing educational needs, SMPC continues to support initiatives that increase access to quality education, such as community scholarships. The company has already provided more than P2 million for education in just the first half of 2026. 

STCI also complements local schools by providing students with additional pathways for continuing their education. Graduates from the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood track of Divine Word School of Semirara Island, Inc. (DWSSII) are welcome to continue their skills training in STCI's certification courses. SMPC employees can also pursue upskilling opportunities through STCI as part of SMPC's talent development program.  

Through STCI, SMPC is helping build a sustainable local workforce equipped with job-ready skills. As STCI’s training is tailored to be relevant to local industry needs, it has maintained a 100% employment rate for its graduates. With more accessible education and training, residents can build skills that open opportunities beyond the life of mining operations.
